VJ Blox

2024 Unity VJ

VJ Blox is a piece of VJ software made in Unity, that allows the crowd to participate in creating visuals at an event. By twisting and pushing buttons on a simple midi controller all kinds of interesting visuals can be made.

The main design goal was to create something that was incredibly simple to pick up for anyone, without detailed explanation. This means that you should be able to just mess around with the buttons and something interesting should come out of it. The challenge there is to make sure all the button parameters have a range that allows you to build something interesting, without easily breaking the visual when you combine them.

The second design goal was that people should be able to make something unique with it, not just mess around with a couple of parameters on a pre-designed visual. To achieve this, the base visuals are usually quite simple in nature: a waving field of cubes, or a sphere made out of cubes. This allows for maximum customization when playing with all the amplitudes/frequency/speeds/rotations, instead of forcing people to always go in a certain direction. Post effects also stack on top of each other, so combinations of multiple post effects can generate very wild and unexpected results.
